| Country |
In 1498, when the Spaniards landed in Venezuela, on Christopher Columbus'
third journey, they found a poor country, which was hardly populated by
native Indians. Today, almost 500 years later, Venezuela, with its almost
22 million inhabitants is one of the larger countries of South America.
Four different regions characterise Venezuela: the highland in the west
of the country, the flat region around Maracaibo surrounding the freshwater
lake of the same name, the central plateau of the Llanos on the Orinoco
river and the highland in the direction of Guayana. |
| Climate |
A tropical climate dominates Venezuela with few noticeable
changes between the seasons. In Caracas, a substantial difference in
temperature can be discerned between day and night. Around Caracas the rainy
season lasts from May to November, whereas in the tropical regions on the
Orinoco river and in the highland of Guayana, rain is to be expected more
frequently. |
