| Country |
Chile is one of the smaller countries in South America. At its widest
point it measures only 180 km, however it is over 4,300 km in length.
The country extends from the snow-covered peaks of the Andes to the sea.
Completely different regions encourage visitors: the rather desert-like
north, the fertile region surrounding the capital Santiago; the lake district
between Santiago and Puerto Montt and Patagonia in the south (around Punta
Arenas). The country has been very much shaped by the influence of German
and Swiss immigrants. Even today most of their descendants live in the
lake district. |
| Climate |
As Chile is south of the equator, the seasons are the exact reverse
of the Swiss seasons. Due to its extreme geographical profile, Chile is
divided into four climatic zones: North Chile (desert), hardly
any rain, extreme variation in temperatures between day and night;
Santiago region, warm and dry summer, rainy and cool winter; Lake
District (Santiago to Puerto Montt), summer and winter regular rain,
sometimes snow in winter; Patagonia (extreme south), often cool
weather, frequent strong winds, snow from May to August (winter). |
